The Cultural Communists and Our Church
We, as a society, no longer believe in personal sins. Forty years ago people may have sinned, but they admitted it. Why this is significant is because those who admitted they did wrong could be saved....

Is your spiritual life a simmering ramen or instant noodles?
After college, (oh so many forgotten years ago I am afraid to count) I had an instant noodle phase. I am almost sure you know what they are: plastic bowls that come with preserved noodles and pouches of flavoring. You pour hot water over the noodles, mix in the flavoring, cover the cup, wait for 3 m...

Speak Up, Lord – I Can't Hear You!
To a person who is really deaf, a hearing impairment is seldom a joking matter. But of all forms of deafness, the most serious is spiritual deafness—the inability to hear the voice of God in the many ways he communicates with us, especially through his incarnate Word, Jesus....

"We must recognize that the evil deed of the enemy-neighbor, the thing that hurts, never quite expresses all that he is. An element of goodness may be found even in our worst enemy. Each of us is something of a schizophrenic personality, tragically divided against ourselves. A persistent civil war rages within all of our lives." – Remember that the next time you are called to forgive another!
Do I love my enemies? Do I pray for those who persecute me? It shouldn't be very hard to come up with people that fall into this category: from people who bug me to people I simply can't stand....

Waving Our Freak Flag: The Proper Use of Catholic Traditions
In my social media feed, I see a recently taken photo of a man wearing a green T-shirt at a soccer field, sitting on an American flag as if it were a beach blanket. His T-shirt boldly declares I STAND FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. A man wearing a blatantly nationalistic sentiment yet desecrating the symb...

THREE QUALITIES OF A GOOD LISTENER
Jesus said that his sheep 'listen to his voice," 'know his voice," and "follow him" (Jn 10:34). This implies that Jesus expected three things of those who claim to be his...

There are two realities we need to accept: first, silence is an integral part of the development of our interior lives--we cannot develop one without silence; and second, in the modern world, silence is something we have to actively pursue--it rarely comes to us organically anymore.
As a society, we tend to freak out about solitude and silence....

My Daughters, My Son and the Gender Divide...
While getting a haircut a few weeks ago, I overheard one of the hairdressers tell another, "Men are all the same. They treat you well in front of your face but you never know what they're doing behind your back. That's why I don't care about any man. I put my needs first."...

TWO QUESTIONS ASKED BY THE FAINT-HEARTED
In the midst of sufferings, all but the most God-trusting souls tend to ask two questions:1) Why this suffering, or at least why now, Lord?; 2) How long will this darkness last, Lord?...

Emphasize reconciliation, not resolution. It is unrealistic to expect everyone to agree about everything. Reconciliation focuses on the relationship, while resolution focuses on the problem. When we focus on reconciliation, the problem loses significance and often becomes irrelevant.
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus teaches us to always take the higher ground. He teaches us to listen and to look at the other with eyes of love and understanding. No argument is really won if it does not end in a reconciliation....

Are You Doing Your Part?
As Catholics, I think there are far too many of us who have grown comfortable depending on others. Each of us knows someone with an amazing ability to explain the Gospel in a manner that leaves newcomers on their knees, crying out for Jesus....

No law made by man can override the norm written by the Creator without society becoming dramatically wounded in what constitutes its basic foundation.
In the Gospel reading Jesus affirms the importance of God's laws and that he has come not "to remove [the law] but to fulfill them." Fulfillment involves not only acknowledging the necessity of compliance with the law but a total immersion of fulfilling the law and its spirit in daily life and actio...

We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
To be salt and light requires a strong and resilient faith, one that can stand firm amidst life's difficult and cruel challenges....
