Let's be a Channel for Peace
2017 has been a rough year. There have been horrible weather disasters. Political tension. People being killed. Someone opened fire on innocents in Las Vegas. There are people in multiple countries being oppressed and killed every day. People in our own communities on the streets. There is violence ...

I Have Been Taken Possession of By Christ
I opened up my devotional today to see this line from Paul in Philippians, “I have been taken possession of by Christ,” and my eyes teared up. What a beautiful line. What does it mean to be taken possession of by Christ? What does it mean for God to grasp you in such a way? A personal reflection......

Dying to self is never portrayed in Scripture as something "optional" in the Christian life.
“Jesus was born into this world only in order to teach us how to die to this world.” St. Stephen’s faith-filled martyrdom focuses our attention on this truth....

New Year—New Life
When an old friend called and reminded me of a story I had written years ago, my heart sank. That particular story had been burned to cinders in the depths of my despair. To my utter discomfort, she reminded me of its premise and said that it had been haunting her. Haunting her?...

Contemplating the All Male Priesthood

Goodness
When we say that something is wet, precisely what do we mean? A cloth, for instance is not wet of its own nature; for it to become wet, it must be wetted by a liquid such as water. It’s the liquid, not the cloth, which of its very nature is wet; the wetted cloth simply participates in the intrinsic ...

We cannot give what we do not have: We cannot bring peace to the world if we ourselves are not peaceful. We cannot bring love to the world if we ourselves are not loving. Our true gift to ourselves and others lies not in what we have but in who we are - No one can give you a clean heart but God………..
In this first reading, the prophet Malachi speaks of a messenger who will clear the way, who "will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold or silver."...

Critical Power
Nina perched her chin on her hands as she lay on the living room floor and stared at the television. Talk show hosts bantered playfully and then introduced their guest. Jacob, a medium built boy with big brown eyes and a sharp chin ambled in and flopped onto the couch. “Whatcha watching?”...

Faithfulness
Faithfulness means “to keep faith”; it is a quality, like all good qualities, that finds its counterpart in God, the prototype of all virtues. The phrase “God is faithful” occurs repeatedly in his holy Word. Yet “the one who calls you is faithful” (1 Thes 5:24), seeks to replicate that virtue in eve...

Today we read a passage similar to Luke 8:19-21. In that passage recall that Mary and Jesus’ relatives were there to see him but couldn’t reach him because of the crowd. When Jesus was told that his family was there he said, “My mother and my brethren are those who hear the word and keep it.” Tod...

No truth is more pervasive in Scripture and Christian tradition than this one—that real freedom is found in obedience and servanthood. And yet no truth is more incongruent with modern culture. Here we stand before a stark either-or: the gospel message of true freedom versus the culture's ideal of self-creation, autonomy, and living "my way."
God really wants us to be happy. He wants us to rejoice in Him, but on His conditions: in doing His Will and not the world’s or the evil spirit’s or as our natural inclinations urge. What a lie to think that joy is found in our self will....
