Being Choked by Thorns
Recently I have been re-reading the Gospel of Luke and have been realizing a sobering and frightening reality creeping into my life. The Gospels are the words of joy and hope for everyone in all places in all times....

Intro to the Eastern Catholic Churches Part VI: Great Byzantine Saints
In the two previous parts of this look into the particular Churches of the Byzantine Rite, we learned more about the history of each of the Churches, where they stand today, and what these Churches do in terms of their liturgical worship and traditions. Now, we take a look at the holy men and women ...

Shattering the Transgender Delusion
One of the hardest things for people on the Autism Spectrum Disorder is coping with the speed at which the world comes at them. Hyper-sensitive to stimuli most of us can ignore, they will try to control the world around them by inventing their own explanations of reality. Our youngest son does thi...

Actions Speak Louder Than Words
Recently, I have been attending the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), also known as the Extraordinary Form, as frequently as I can. I still end up attending Mass in my home parish, which uses the Novus Ordo (Ordinary Form), quite frequently as well....

The Sun will rise and set regardless. What we choose to do with the light while it's here is up to us.
In Greek, the verse reads, “You and you alone are the light of the world.” Shining is not optional for light. It is a key feature of light. Likewise, we as Christians must understand the function of light....

The Unceasing Call of Truth: seek it, embrace it, let the Love who is Absolute Truth transform your life
The call of Truth is unceasing and unquenchable. It cannot be permanently silenced but only suppressed briefly. Nevertheless, it is often feared. Stepping into the light of truth always requires change....

A life without purpose is no life at all.
Are we living a life with purpose? Many of us live with a purpose to get done whatever pops up. That is not a purpose. That is merely responding to our circumstances. No, a purpose will lead our life and what we do. And following the ultimate purpose with give us a full life....

Suffering Through Cancer and Divorce
Fr. Francis Fernandez makes this bold claim in a daily meditation I found in his book In Conversation with God. This statement almost made me laugh out loud the first time I read it and I had breast cancer and was going through a divorce. How could God possibly be favoring me by allowing me to suffe...

Holiness and Trust
God’s generosity is reminiscent of the ice cream stores that feature a wide variety of ice cream. The variegations of the virtue of trust are just another of the many ways that God’s goodness is reflected....

If your day is hemmed in with prayer, it is less likely to come unraveled.
In our often busy lives, though, we need to make time for ourselves and that can be perfect time for prayer. It can be as simple as a deep breath where we take a moment to be grateful for what we have....

Why I only celebrated Chinese New Year at Church
Chinese New Year has just passed and many went back to their hometowns to be with family and celebrate. While I don't object to people seeing their relatives and friends during this festive period, I do object to the increasing materialistic behaviour and attitudes of modern society, particularly, a...

The Light Shines in the Darkness, and the Darkness Has Not Overcome It
I talked with a man recently who used to be a Catholic until someone persuaded him that the Church had it all wrong. Someone had used scripture to convince him that it was idolatrous to pray the rosary and that the Eucharist was a mere symbol...

Why Should I Be Modest?
Modesty is hard. I admit it, staying modestly dressed takes commitment and struggle in this day and age. I love fashion and really enjoy shopping, but when I put that and modesty together in this culture I’m faced with a challenge. If it’s high in the front, it’s low in the back....

"Come to the edge,'' He said. They said, ''We are afraid.'' ''Come to the edge,'' He said. They came. He pushed them... and they flew."
What causes us to be afraid? Basically, the root of every fear is the assumption that we are not loved, not really-really loved. We're afraid of being open and honest with others because they might take advantage of it to hurt us. We're afraid our prayers won't be answered because God doesn't care....

The Missing Piece
I love a good jigsaw puzzle. When I see the beautiful image on the box lid, I can't wait to begin assembling it myself. But the amazing thing is, every time I pry open that container, what I see inside looks nothing like the illustration on the outside. Instead, it's a jumbled up pile of misshape...
