Are Heavenly-minded People No Earthly Good?
Quite often religious people are accused of being so heavenly minded, they are no earthly good. The thinking goes that people who look forward to spending eternity in peaceful joy with God in Heaven are too willing to accept unacceptable conditions here and now....

The Human Element in the Eucharistic Miracle
Often I find myself contemplating the miracle of human life. In the ebb and flow of modern day existence often such miracles are sadly thrown away, disregarded, aborted, euthanized....

Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?
Why do we pray? What motivates us to pray? When do we pray? These are questions that come to mind as I reflect upon this Gospel passage. I think prayers of petition, prayers for favors needed are probably on the top of everyone’s list of why we pray....

The Holy Family: Resilience, Perseverance, and Grace
The family unit has been under increased pressure from society and so many families have accounts of sadness, conflict, and are on the verge of disintegration. The recent homilies from Pope Francis center around the 100th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions in Fatima and the revelation that Mary t...

Scripture alone, a tradition of men
A tradition of men, such as the one mentioned in Scripture, would be the doctrine of Scripture alone, which gives all individuals the right to interpret Scripture any way they want. Thus, invalidating the God given rule that one must obey those He has put in charge of our souls, in the Church....

Dear Pope Francis - Book Review
What would it be like to have your letter answered by Pope Francis? That is what many children from all over the world got to experience in this book. There were 259 letters received from 26 countries and 30 of those letters were picked and answered by the Pope himself....

A Call to Christian Empathy
In 2001, journalist Barbara Ehrenreich published her acclaimed book “Nickel and Dimed (On NOT Getting by in America)”. From 1998 to 2000, the journalist went undercover as an unskilled laborer to take on minimum wage jobs and investigate first-hand the plight of the “working poor.”...

If you're not making someone else's life better, then you're wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other lives better.
Jesus’ words call us to focus on lifting each other up instead of putting each other down. They call us to bring life to our worship together instead of death (It’s not always the pastor’s fault)....

Exaggerating for the Lord

An Epiphany Story
Leaving the confessional was business as usual, nothing but a bright smile walking eagerly to my preferred pew of penance. The way I feel leaving Reconciliation and preparing to take the Eucharist is marveling and it surprises me that I’m not making daily appointments with our pastor....

It was just a normal day, or was it ?
It was a normal Sunday morning and I was at 11.30 Mass, as normal. The Priest had walked down the isle to the altar with the Deacon and altar servers at his side, as normal, and my oldest daughter and two Children had slipped into the pew beside me and this was also normal....

How St. Thérèse called me to help spread her Rose Petals of Love.
I don’t understand the fascination with Black Friday. It seems to me the thing that makes Black Friday work is that shoppers must all want to purchase the same thing either for themselves or more nobly to give to someone else, be it the latest appliance, an innovative electronic, that most advertise...

Catholic in a Post-Truth World
“Truth. What is truth?” While there are plenty of speculative interpretations attached to Pilate’s remarks, we can’t really know what the Roman governor’s intentions were as he responded to Jesus’ declaration that that those listening to His (Jesus’) words belonged to the Truth....

Visits with Lloyd
