Sympathy for the Devil and to Next Year in Cuba...
On Christmas Eve 1978, as my great grandfather was in his final stage of life, we were gathered at my cousin's house in Chicago. Most of the family was there, at least those of us living in exile. I remember because that was the winter the great blizzard hit the Windy City shortly after we left....

Yes, Catholics Can Believe In Santa Claus
Today, December 6th, is the death anniversary of Saint Nicholas, who passed on nearly 1700 years ago in either 345 or 352 A.D., yet Santa Claus lives on! Among Catholics and other fellow Christians, a great debate rages whether children should be introduced to Santa Claus or not, with strong argumen...

Christmas and a Homeless Man Named Charles
Long, stringy, unkept hair framed his down-turned face as he sat sleeping on the Walmart bench. His ragged, dirty clothes hung loosely so that his size was masked. A hand of fresh bananas laying beside him, someone had taken pity and left the small meal for his discovery when he awoke....

Keep vigilance over your hearts because the devil is astute. He is never cast out forever. It will only be so on the last day.
This preparation does not involve stocking up on canned goods or bottled water nor does it involve complacency....

Romans 8:28
“And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose, (Rom. 8:28). Do you believe that? Do you believe that He’ll make all things work in your favor if you trust him?...

How are you experiencing Advent?
How are you experiencing Advent? I like the way John Michael Talbot describes it: "Get to journey through Advent first. It's a season of repentance, like Lent with a bit of sugar on top! Then we are ready for Christmas!”...

Your sins aren't that special
“Your sins aren’t that special.” The girls giggled, perhaps a little shocked by what I said, simply because it came as a surprise. They were concerned about going to Confession to a priest they knew....

Even Naughty Children Get Presents for Christmas
After a busy morning of my wrangling children and an afternoon manning a craft table at a Christmas Craft Fair, I decided to appease the requests of my younger ones who'd been begging to visit Santa at the mall....

It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do little; do something.
Just like the centurion, we should look to those in need with the same kind of sympathy regardless of our status. As Christians we should always look beyond our own situation and even defy society's expectations for the sheer well-being of those that suffer....

Jesus' Coming
On the First Sunday of Advent, we heard a reading about the coming of Jesus. And none of us knows when that will be. For all we know, He may choose to come tomorrow....

So You Mean I Can't Run
Last evening, I was working again at the front desk here at St. Anne's. One of our residents went outside for one final cigarette for the night. When he came back in, I asked how the weather was out there....

God will always have the final say. No matter what, no matter the situation. We as followers need to learn to ride with the tide so to speak. But sometimes His final word can seem cruel and unfair....

Faith alone people suffer with two false assumptions.
The difference between Catholics and Protestants is that they see faith as something that they can measure. Therefore, they claim to be saved by faith alone. I'm reminded of the question that faith alone people ask faith and works people....

There is only one kind of shock worse than the totally unexpected: the expected for which one has refused to prepare.
“Stay awake!” Jesus shouts this to us in the Gospel on this First Sunday of Advent. These words sum up the whole season. These words sum up what the original Christmas was like for Joseph, Mary, Elizabeth and Zechariah, for King Herod and the three wise kings, and for the innkeepers whose homes were...

Book Review: "Positively Medieval"
When I travelled to Ireland this fall to spend a week with Benedictine monks (I was received as a Novice Oblate of Silverstream Priory, near Stamullen in County Meath, on September 4), I toted along Jamie Blosser's new book - Positively Medieval: The Surprising, Dynamic, Heroic Church of the Middle ...
