A Bible Reading Plan (Revised)
From time to time I am asked to suggest a pattern for daily Bible reading. I read at least two chapters each morning from the Old Testament (OT) and two each evening from the New Testament (NT). Each sitting takes about 15 minutes, or 30 minutes/day....

Prayer is not an old woman's idle amusement. Properly understood and applied, it is the most potent instrument of action.
Understanding Jesus’ death on the Cross as an act of redemption helps us understand that God does not promise to remove all our difficulties, but instead, God promises us that He will get us through to the other side. Jesus did not only predict His Passion and Death, but also His Resurrection!...

Do Christians care less?
For a Christian, if we aren’t continually caring more, does it mean we are caring less? More caring may equate to an increase in effort in our minds, but can we strive to care more not with quantity, but with quality?...

Matters of Taste
I see these articles bemoaning the lack of reverence in Mass with some regularity. Many of them—if not most—point to the use of papier-mâché puppets, clown Masses, or priests on hover-boards to make the point....

Finally Home
The Catholic Liturgy entails many things. We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing, and to remember what He has done for us. We listen to sacred scripture and see how the Old and New Testaments are connected. We gather as one family united in our faith in the Lord, but most importantly we ga...

Sharing Christ's Passion
One of our parishioners has been arrested under the Ala illegal Immigration Law. She is a mother of three, ages 5,3, 1, and has been in the United States for years. She came here with her husband to have a better life, to leave behind a life controlled by drug cartels. The Passion of Christ begins...

Even those who have renounced Christianity and attack it, in their inmost being still follow the Christian ideal
Herod was like the people who flock to healing services today looking for miracles but not for Jesus. When he finally met Jesus personally, the encounter did not change him. Why not?...

Facing the Truth About Facebook
It's not that I have anything against Facebook... On second thought, maybe I do have a little something against it. In many ways, I think it encourages some of the poorest dimensions of our culture: shallowness, pettiness, inauthenticity, and meaningless busyness--the antitheses of reflection and su...

Bless your Enemies
I simply worshipped the heroes of ancient Greece when I was at school. I loved to hear stories about Troy and the heroes who fought there. I loved to read about the Persian wars and about the warriors who fought for freedom at Marathon, Salamis and Thermopylae. Most of all I worshipped Alexander the...

Virtuous Obedience
As a seminarian, obedience is something that I am encouraged in and taught about with frequency. This is not by accident- even the smallest actions of a parish priest, no matter how trivial, can affect his relationship with his people, with his bishop, or even God!...

How Many Pairs of Shoes Do You Have?

I don't think very many people get converted by someone telling them they are terrible.
During Roman occupation, Hebrew tax collectors made a livelihood of over-taxing their own people and keeping the change. As a successful collector, Matthew was a cheater, a liar, a traitor, and a thief. Do you know any cheaters and liars? Has anyone betrayed you? Were you ever robbed?...
