Spirit and Truth
It was Friday morning. All week Philadelphia had been preparing for the Pope’s arrival. I headed over to the Convention Center attended Mass and heard the last keynote speakers Pastor Rick Warren and Cardinal O’Malley....

Book Review - Rediscover Jesus!
On Super Bowl Sunday 2016, I finished reading the book written by Matthew Kelly entitled “Rediscover Jesus – An Invitation.” The 188 - page soft cover edition was a gift to me from my parish by way of a friend. I am grateful to both for inviting me to walk with them more closely with Our Lord and ...

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.
When Jesus in this Gospel passage notes that a lamp is meant to be “placed on a lampstand”, He does not specifically refer to His disciples here as “the light of the world”, as He does in Matthew’s account of the Sermon on the Mount. Nonetheless, Mark’s text makes the inference clear....

What Protestants should know
Jesus Christ established the Catholic Church. It is clear from even a cursory reading of the New Testament, that there is no mention of any Protestant Church within those venerable pages. Nor is there any mention of any Protestant doctrine which contradicts the Catholic Church....

Massive Applause
While visiting home for winter break last month, I was attending a Sunday Mass with my grandmother, when a challenging thing occurred. Between Eucharistic reception and the concluding rite, the pastor invited all of those who had upcoming birthdays to the front of the church, blessed them while the...

What's A Parent To Do?
We’ve all heard or used the phrase — time is money … gotta get going; time doesn’t wait. How about this phrase: time’s ticking and I have so much to do. Many of us live the rush hour from the time we get up until the time we retire at night. Some keep going even then....

Signum Crucis: A Spiritual Weapon for Men
One of today’s most taken-for-granted and often forgotten Catholic treasures is our Signum Crucis; the sign of the cross. Gone are the days when it was a norm in the daily lives of Catholics, as was depicted in the movie, “Born on the Fourth of July,” in where a scene shows the main character, playe...

Being Versus Action: A Reflection
The tension between ‘Being’ and ‘Action’ is fundamental. We know the importance of balance in our work and the need to take time to simply ‘be.’ But for many of us, like Martha in the Gospel, activity is what we do, essential to our nature....

Lead Me To Calvary
When I was an Evangelical Christian I loved the old hymns of the faith. There is nothing wrong with the newer songs or even the simplistic worship music that are so popular among young church goers (and by now some in their middle age too). But in food terms the newer songs are Big Macs and the olde...

That you glorify God with one mind and one mouth
I hear many people, to this day, say that they left the Church because they feel the Mass is dead. They don’t get anything out of it. They also complain that the people in the Mass aren’t very friendly. Not very inviting to outsiders....

The 40 Day Lenten Blogging Challenge
I'll say this in my best Ned-Stark-from-Game-of-Thrones voice: Lent is here. For most people in the US, this is an annual thing where Catholics walk around with weird black letter T's on their foreheads, and they start exercising for a few weeks and frequent McDonald's for their infamous yearly Fish...

Strengthen Your Lenten Journey Through Fasting
When you hear the word fasting, do you automatically cringe? Do you dread Ash Wednesday or Good Friday? Or do you embrace the self-denial of fasting on those days? If you’re like most people, you might not look forward to Ash Wednesday or Good Friday, the Church’s compulsory days of fasting....

God Shares Our Pain: Lessons from the Adoration Chapel
"Sticks and stones can break our bones, but words can never hurt us." I'm sitting here, fairly late at night, in the Adoration Chapel at my church. It's quiet; it's dimly lit. It feels holy....

Life in Lent
I have noticed a definite trend as I move through the homeschool week... On Monday morning I am speaking in active sentences packed with spelling words, circulating around the room, radiating energy and enthusiasm as I multi-task to my heart's content....

Youth Ministry Shouldn't Be What It Used To Be
I answered the call to youth ministry from the pastor of my former parish back in 1990. I tried to meet kids where they were at by organizing youth group meetings, planning fun events, holding retreats, and by just listening. At the time, Holy Hour, Eucharistic Adoration, the Sacrament of Confessi...

5 Good Minutes with God - Lent is like a conversion van
Growing up in the early 70s I was always amazed by people who would spend years building custom conversion vans in our small town. Perhaps you remember them too or have at least seen photographs of these amazing vehicles....

Giving Up Something For Lent? Not so FAST
Ah Lent! The season of the universal Church’s liturgical year that is centered on penance. Also known as the time in which the Gloria and Alleluia are not sung and Mass tends to be slightly more solemn in order to provide an environment for reflection and humble prayer....

Out of the Mouths of Babes: "And I want it back!"
Decades ago, Art Linkletter hosted a television program that featured interviews with children, in a segment called “Kids Say the Darndest Things.” I’ve been thinking that Jesus likely could write a book, too, as Linkletter did, on the darndest things that kids say--kids of all ages, kids from all p...
