Earth To Catholics: It's Time To Change
For the past week, I have noted with interest and sadness the strong negative reaction of many Catholics to Pope Francis’ new encyclical, Laudato Si. Apparently, the Pope’s call to radical conversion, not only in how we treat the Earth, but also in how we deal with the economy and our fellow human b...

Is Gay Ok?
The issue of same sex marriage is now before the United States Supreme Court. Ireland has already accepted same sex marraige and I assume the USA will not be far behind. Currently, the constitution will change if it is accepted. All the states in the nation will then have to accept same sex marriage...

A Connecticut Yankee in King Jesus' Court - part 8
Jerry Francis was trying hard to be a gracious guest. The followers of Jesus had reluctantly agreed to let Jerry and his friend Benjamin visit their secret lodging place in the city. Simon the Zealot was quite surprised when Peter and John arrived and introduced the two visitors. Simon had always do...

On this Day in 1830
On July 19, 1830, an angel awakened a 24 year old novice of the Daughters of Charity, Catherine Labouré and said, “Come to the chapel; the Blessed Virgin is waiting for you.”...

A sacrament--like marriage--means living a life better than your natural instincts, so that you're modeling God. And God never gives up.
Couples have the grace of the married state — the grace they receive in the Sacrament of Marriage — which enables them to live all the human and Christian virtues in their married life: understanding, good humor, patience, forgiveness, refinement and consideration in their mutual relations. The impo...

Analysis of a Conversion - Why I left the Catholic Church, the devil made me do it
I've been talking with people of many faiths for over 20 years, now. During that time, I've met a great number who fell away from the Catholic Church. Catholics are, by far, the largest group of Christians. By ourselves, we total over 1 billion. But, somewhere, I heard that the 2nd largest Chris...

A Swift Kick in the Butt to Parents (And Invitation to Turn IT Around)
We labor for the kind of house that makes it impossible for it to ever be a home. We celebrate pregnancy long enough to deliver them predominantly to the care of another. In the name of our expensive education. In their name "boredom" or "unfulfilled."...

40 Days for Life Campaign: Vision and mission
The 40-days for Life campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities ... and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ's resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of His...

Goodbye "Little Bro"--You and Your Watermelon are Forever in Our Hearts
This picture was taken at my daughter's wedding and it was a happy day. Facing the picture, the young fellow on the left is my "baby" brother, Johnny. The one to his left in the back is my brother, Bobby. I am to the far right, my sister, Carolyn, is in front of me and my brother, Danny, is to her l...

Five Ways To Show Jesus You Love Him
Sing a song, write a poem, go to mass or adoration. As you go about your day, offer a prayer from your heart. This is a good thing to do for other people in your life too. Life is so blazing short, make sure you tell the people you love that you love them. Tell them why, tell them often. This is the...

Soul-Searching
“What do you girls have to say for yourselves?” My best friend and I stood speechless as Mrs. L., our eighth grade religious education instructor who had recently prepared us for confirmation, probed us with interrogating eyes. I could hear the seconds tick away on the wall clock in the audio visua...

Thoughts on Prayer and Adoration
To sit, even for a single moment, in the Presence of God during adoration or in the tabernacle, is the source of amazing graces for our souls. Even the angels cannot measure the graces poured into our hearts and souls for they are too many to count. In these times when our world has gone crazy and o...

Romans 5:2
Romans 5:2 says,"Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God's glory." None of us are perfect, and because of that, we don't really deserve to be here on Earth. But yet we are. ...

Why can't a Catholic take communion in a Protestant church?
I hear it a lot, this question of why a Catholic can’t tke communion in a Protestant service, especially from Catholics whose extended famiies include a lot of Portestant relatives. Most often, there is appeal to neighborliness. “I know it’s not the same, but is just seems rude not to go up and ...

What We Really Need
Darkness cannot coexist with light. Not only does Scripture declare this to be true, but experience also testifies to it. Walk into any dark room and flip the light switch. Darkness flees even from the corners. But turn off the light, or shroud it with a thick fabric, and darkness floods back....

What the world needs now..
We all know the song lyrics written by Hal David and made famous by Jackie DeShannon in April 1965, during the height of the Vietnam War. I was comfortable in my mother’s womb in April of 1965. I had no knowledge of what was going on in my country. I was safe and secure. I was not yet born, but ...

Witnessing honesty frightens some people because they haven't known authenticity.
Maybe I was praying for him then, in my own way. Does God have a set way of prayer, a way that He expects each of us to follow? I doubt it. I believe some people-- lots of people-- pray through the witness of their lives, through the work they do, the friendships they have, the love they offer peopl...

Dad Jokes
So today I got to thinking about my parents as I was sitting with them both at the breakfast table. They celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary in October of last year. Now my dad is the type of guy who has a very sweet, ironic sense of humor. He just cracks himself up and to be honest with ...

On the Tongue and From A Priest
I stopped receiving Holy Communion in the hand about 5 years ago. Around the same time, I stopped being an Euchartistic Minister. I typically will not receive the Precious Blood. And almost always, I will receive Holy Communion only from a priest (I do make exceptions for a deacon)....
