I recently came home from a retreat. Retreats are wonderful, blessed experiences -- the deep peace you feel, the communion with God, the abundance of prayer and reflection time, the awakenings you come to, the clarity of God’s voice, and the love and community of others with you....

Pen Pal Teaches Me About the Sabbath — and Baseball
A couple of months ago at my 40th college reunion, I finally got to meet my pen pal face-to-face. (Yes, I just used the term “pen pal,” an idea that is about as old-fashioned as going to Confession every Saturday afternoon and wearing a jacket and tie to Mass every Sunday morning.)...

"We should challenge the relativism that tells us there is no right or wrong, when every instinct of our mind knows it is not so, and is a mere excuse to allow us to indulge in what we believe we can get away with. A world without values quickly becomes a world without value."
Our culture today wants to preach what we call “relativism.” This is an idea that what is good and true for me may not be good and true for you but that, in spite of all having different “truths,” we can still all be one happy family. But that’s not the Truth!...

I Am Not Cut Out To Be A Good Christian
I don't think I'm cut out to be a good Christian. It does not seem to work out for me. Our church has a number of groups which we are encouraged to join in order to help other people less fortunate than ourselves in society....

Our job in keeping God's name holy.
It may seem odd that we can do anything to keep God’s name holy. Indeed, God’s name is holy without us. But we are called to keep God’s name holy, or hallowed, in the Our Father....

Blue Ink Flowed
Edna watched the fly buzz around her kitchen with all the intensity of a warrior spying out the movements of the enemy. Finally, the devil’s minion dared to land on her clean counter. Ah ha! With a victorious slap, she smashed it. Barbarian exultation surged through her....

How Beautiful! "The Holy Mass"
Walk into church, as the Mass has already begun. How many are reading the church bulletin or the diocesan newspaper, not singing or even watching as the entrance procession is beginning. The Liturgy of the Word finds many on their cell phones or completely ignoring where they are....

Raising athletes of faith
Catholic parents are called to raise children of faith. Sounds easy — right? That requires bringing them to Mass each Sunday, teaching them how to pray, and talking to them about God, morality and faith — right? Easy Peasy; however, let’s not jump to that conclusion so fast....
