The word “disciple” means “one who learns”, and the two disciples of this Gospel passage are obviously devoted to learning. Undoubtedly they asked themselves what all these amazing events could mean....

Beginning Again and Again with Christ
During Easter time the liturgical season takes readings from the Resurrection accounts. In the Gospel of John, there is a curious appearance to some apostles. It is curious because it shows a stark contrast in Peter’s character....

Purgatory, Hell, and the Afterlife.
One of the things that seems to confuse our non-Catholic Christian brethren is the subject of purgatory. Those who enter purgatory are guaranteed to go to heaven at some point. Purgatory is not a second chance at redemption, and nor is it a permanent destination....

Back to Basics: Learning to Rely on a Loving God
One of nature’s most fascinating learning processes takes place when an eaglet learns to fly. At the appropriate time, the mother eagle nudges the fledgling out of the lofty cliffside nest, and spirals around it as it falls fluttering toward the ground....

Lord, Have Divine Mercy on Us
The true meaning of the word mercy is often misunderstood and misused. Far from indicating that all bets are off and you are free to do whatever you please – without repercussions – true mercy has ramifications that benefit the immortal soul....

How might I be covering up disordered motives using an altruistic facade? What am I distracted by and where do I need to redirect my focus to Jesus, even if Jesus is sharing some startling or sobering news in my own life, that could be difficult for me to accept?
In the end, His death was not an accident. But for every person who worked to nail Jesus to the Cross, there was a choice made, or many choices. We remember that on the Cross, Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”...

The Kiss of God
It was a cozy, chatty, pre-dinner cocktail conversation – just the newlyweds, with myself as the invited dinner guest in their living room. He was an open, warm, and ebullient person; she was gracious, but somewhat shy and reserved....

I know that you acted in ignorance. Surprising fruits of Lent
.Now, I know, brothers and sisters, that you acted in ignorance, just as your leaders did; but God has brought to fulfillment what he had announced though the mouth of all the prophets... I italicized the words credited to St. Peter from the Thursday, April 5th reading because they seemed to shou...

A Complainer or a Contributor Art Thou?
I sometimes wonder whether some of us are complainers or contributors. It seems easy and convenient to complain and demand many things from the church, especially where one’s convenience or comfort is at stake, and some even seem to have a sense of entitlement to various services and assistance that...

It's not about finding ways to avoid God's judgment and feeling like a failure if you don't do everything perfectly. It's about fully experiencing God's love and letting it perfect you. It's not about being somebody you are not. It's about becoming who you really are.
With only a word spoken from the mouth of Jesus, “Mary”, her eyes are opened and a whole new awareness begins in her life....
