Time Split in Two
The death and resurrection of Jesus split time in two and began a religion many powerful people tried to stop. The first attempts to stop Christianity began with physical torture and death. Early Christians bought the “field” that contained the pearl of great price with the most precious currency th...

Compromise where you can. Where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move, it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye, and say 'No, you move'.
In the Gospel reading we see Jesus arguing with the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law....

Do You Want Jesus?
The bottom line is - if we don’t want the Eucharist, we don’t want Jesus. And if we have left the Catholic Church, we have turned our back and abandoned the Eucharist. What this means is that that we have denied and turned our back on Jesus....

Peter and Judas: Similar but Very Different
This week is Palm Sunday, and the gospel reading at Mass is the entire Passion of Jesus. I’d like to focus on two other people mentioned in the Passion account: Judas and Peter....

The Healing Power of the Eucharist
In 1 Thessalonians 5:23, St. Paul speaks about three parts of the human personality: “May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (NAB, emphasis added)....

Day 318 – The Effect of the Eucharist
Another important parallel in today’s reading. Recall that the events we are reading now are taking place within the context of the Last Supper. The extensive teachings of Jesus are his final verbal lessons to his Apostles before the Passion begins....

Thank God For Unanswered Prayer
Our prayer petitions are often similar to those of others. Some prayers address wants, some needs, and some desires. As the saying goes, “There are three ways God answers our prayers – yes, no, and not now.”...

Self-sufficiency is the enemy of salvation. If you are self-sufficient, you have no need of God. If you have no need of God, you do not seek Him. If you do not seek Him, you will not find Him.
Indeed sin and salvation are the story of our lives: we see both elements at play in our personal narratives....

Praying a Counter-Cultural Rosary on the Frontlines of the Culture War
As I stood on the country highway praying a rosary for marriage, I could not help but think I was on the front line. Talking about traditional marriage is essential, but it can be done from the safety of the home. Writing about the subject is an exercise done in the isolation of an office. When you ...

Purpose of Life: The Catholic Gospel
What is the purpose of our existence? This is probably the question asked the most in philosophy. Yet, the answer to this question from a biblical and Catholic perspective provides us with a testimony of God’s love for us. For what both the Church and scripture tells us, the reason why any of us exi...

Corporate Healing in the Liturgy
There are four forms in which God is present in the liturgy, all of which can effect healing in the community. These four forms are listed in the Vatican II document The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy....

Day 317 – The Promise of the Holy Spirit
Today we read John chapter 14. I think it is one of the most difficult but most engaging chapters in the Bible. One reason it is difficult is that Jesus keeps switching between the Father, Himself, and the Holy Spirit from one moment to the next....

St. Joseph was an ordinary sort of man on whom God relied to do great things. He did exactly what the Lord wanted him to do.
We have all seen paintings and sculptures of St. Joseph that, at least to me, look too bland and sweet to represent the real Joseph. There is nothing bland in the Joseph portrayed in the first of the two options for today’s gospel reading, a man torn inside by real tension and anguish....

"Baptism" A Catechesis that makes Sense
A question arose, at a parish leadership meeting, regarding the best method for teaching birth parents regarding the baptism of their children. Too much theological catechesis might appear boring, at least, confusing at most, to those who just want their child baptized. Making them listen as if to...

Give Us A Sign
They say, "There are none so blind as those who will not see", and I suppose this applies to many people throughout the ages. We are all set in our ways and believe what we have convinced ourselves to believe, often with no proof or logic but just prejudice, and that is that....

Jesus' Corporate Healing Presence
When pondering our personal encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist at Mass, we should not lose sight of the fact that the Eucharist is also a societal encounter where God’s transforming power is available to us corporately as alluded to in previous articles. The Christian community can be compared to...

Day 316 – John Recounts the Last Supper
Today we read John’s recounting of the Last Supper. It is important to remember when reading John that his Gospel was written last and that he likely had read one or more of the other synoptic Gospels. Thus, John writes with at least the partial purpose of filling in some of the blanks....

Self-interest is but the survival of the animal in us. Humanity only begins for man with self-surrender.
The glory of the Cross is the glory of the grain of wheat falling to the ground and dying. Its glory lies not in spectacle, in the way that our day measures glory....
