Why do We Need to Embrace Suffering?
When Mother Teresa’s work in Calcutta, India was gaining fame in the 1970's, she drew the attention of national news reporters. A reporter was interviewing Mother Teresa in the slums of Calcutta. In the morning, Mother Teresa told the reporter all about the joy of God....

What does success mean to you?
“What does success mean to you?” That’s the question I was asked on February 5 by a great man who was once a significant mentor in my life. It’s kind of ironic because what started the discussion was me asking him to push me to my limits as a writer. In the week that has followed, this is the first ...

Mercy-Appreciation
Did you know that human eyes have never seen the world’s second highest mountain? A few feet lower than Mount Everest, it’s twice as tall as the highest mountain in the continental United States....

Day 285 – The Cloud of Witnesses
Chapter 12 starts with another great and poetic verse of scripture: Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,...

A Picture of God Through artists, musicians, and writers.
An artist will sit in front of an easel, brush in hand, and mind on what can only be seen by this creator of something beyond the imagination, a dream, a flow of dancing colors, and a beginning of just what is to be a perfection of strokes that will resemble his/her beauty of love and understanding....

"No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great."
In this Gospel, Christ is asking his followers to deny themselves and not be centered on self, to put others ahead of self in what they do, to take inconveniences and suffering in imitation of the suffering Son of Man....

One step
I haven’t written in a while. Not because I haven’t wanted to, but because I just haven’t been able to think of anything to write. But then I saw this meme the other day, and it really touched my heart. It said: no matter how many steps you take away from God—it only takes one to get back....

Mercy in Cosmic Camouflage: Providence At Work
Even for a weathered cattleman, watching cows forage on a countryside greensward would normally not evoke an awareness of God’s merciful love – unless that stockman stopped to marvel at the fact that God must have had the animal-to-land ratio in mind when he created grasses. Why?...

Day 284 – The Litany of Old Testament Saints
Today’s reading begins with one of the most famous and powerful lines of scripture: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1...

Do we give God the Praise He is due?
Let’s begin with the doxology - words by Thomas Ken; “Praise God from whom all blessings flow……….” add the text of Psalm 148; “Praise the Lord from the heavens; give praise in the heights. Praise him, all you angels; give praise all you hosts.” (Ps. 148 1-2). Continue with Proverbs;...

It's not at all hard to understand a person; it's only hard to listen without bias.
Aren’t you glad the disciples’ humanity is displayed for us? I’ve often felt that if they had understood and got everything right, most of us mere humans might never take the Scriptures to read because the bar is set so high....

How Can a Doctor Be an Atheist?
Recently I was waiting in the examination room at the doctor’s office. I don’t really like the fact that I now can utter the phrase, “My cardiologist told me…” I guess having a doctor who I can describe as “My cardiologist” is just another sign of getting old. At least I am yet unable to say, “My on...

Book Review—When You Fast: Jesus Has Provided the Solution
There are many references to fasting in Scripture. In Saint Matthew’s Gospel, Chapter 5, Jesus puts the solution in front of us when he says, “When you fast.” He doesn’t say “If you fast,” but “When you fast.” As Christians, we’re supposed to imitate Jesus. Jesus fasted before every major event in H...

Day 283 – The Once and For All Sacrifice
Today the author of Hebrews reaches one of his main points. The prior sacrifices of the Old Covenant were ineffective and were merely yearly reminders that we are sinners. In contrast, Jesus sacrifice is sufficient to affect the forgiveness of sins....

ACTUAL GRACE -- TO SERVE GOD!
YE-S-S-S! Sanctified, Serving, Sacrificial. The four words that keep Catholic Christians aware of the special Divine favor they were given. In previous article, Sanctification Is A Process, I wrote of the initiation into God’s sovereign will for all His creation, to be holy and to live a holy life. ...

What we do see depends mainly on what we look for. ... In the same field the farmer will notice the crop, the geologists the fossils, botanists the flowers, artists the coloring, sportmen the cover for the game. Though we may all look at the same things, it does not all follow that we should see them.
In the Gospel reading today, Jesus is disappointed, angry and exasperated with the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law. They refuse to hear what Jesus is teaching. They refuse to see the signs of his credentials in his many good works and miracles. Yet they insist on asking for a "sign."...

Sorrowful Mysteries - The Crucifixion
Lord Jesus, I cannot imagine the immensity of your suffering as Your wounds were ripped open once more, as Your garments were stripped from your flesh. The humiliation of Your nakedness before the crowds was eased by the swiftness of the love of Your mother. She wrapped you in swaddling clothes when...
