Suffering Through Cancer and Divorce
Fr. Francis Fernandez makes this bold claim in a daily meditation I found in his book In Conversation with God. This statement almost made me laugh out loud the first time I read it and I had breast cancer and was going through a divorce. How could God possibly be favoring me by allowing me to suffe...

Holiness and Trust
God’s generosity is reminiscent of the ice cream stores that feature a wide variety of ice cream. The variegations of the virtue of trust are just another of the many ways that God’s goodness is reflected....

If your day is hemmed in with prayer, it is less likely to come unraveled.
In our often busy lives, though, we need to make time for ourselves and that can be perfect time for prayer. It can be as simple as a deep breath where we take a moment to be grateful for what we have....

Why I only celebrated Chinese New Year at Church
Chinese New Year has just passed and many went back to their hometowns to be with family and celebrate. While I don't object to people seeing their relatives and friends during this festive period, I do object to the increasing materialistic behaviour and attitudes of modern society, particularly, a...

The Light Shines in the Darkness, and the Darkness Has Not Overcome It
I talked with a man recently who used to be a Catholic until someone persuaded him that the Church had it all wrong. Someone had used scripture to convince him that it was idolatrous to pray the rosary and that the Eucharist was a mere symbol...

Intro to the Eastern Catholic Churches Part VI: The Byzantine Rite and Its History
The Catholic Church is made up of many members, over an estimated 1 billion people. Therefore, it’s not surprising that many of these Catholic Christians worship in many different, appropriate ways through their liturgies and their traditions....

Prayer Strategy Number Four
I used to think “scripted prayer” was an oxymoron, that scripted or "canned" prayers, like those in prayer books, are less meaningful (read: less spiritual) than spontaneous ones....

Why Should I Be Modest?
Modesty is hard. I admit it, staying modestly dressed takes commitment and struggle in this day and age. I love fashion and really enjoy shopping, but when I put that and modesty together in this culture I’m faced with a challenge. If it’s high in the front, it’s low in the back....

"Come to the edge,'' He said. They said, ''We are afraid.'' ''Come to the edge,'' He said. They came. He pushed them... and they flew."
What causes us to be afraid? Basically, the root of every fear is the assumption that we are not loved, not really-really loved. We're afraid of being open and honest with others because they might take advantage of it to hurt us. We're afraid our prayers won't be answered because God doesn't care....

Literally unlimited
A friend of mine was going through the RCIA program at our church, preparing for baptism and confirmation in the Catholic faith. She left one Wednesday night meeting troubled. They had been talking about the bible, and she grew up fervently believing that every word of the bible was literally true....

The Missing Piece
I love a good jigsaw puzzle. When I see the beautiful image on the box lid, I can't wait to begin assembling it myself. But the amazing thing is, every time I pry open that container, what I see inside looks nothing like the illustration on the outside. Instead, it's a jumbled up pile of misshape...

What the World Has Forgotten
We spend plenty of money on textbooks, activities, courses and other things that we believe would make us "successful", all for temporary gratification. We go out of our way to spend on mere keys that might open doors, yet when it comes to serving God, the slightest thing makes people moan....

Question; Sacred Tradition
As Catholics we do not hold to the Protestant reformation idea of Sola Scriptura (The Bible Alone), we believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and as such should be revered, respected, obeyed, thoroughly studied, and implemented in our daily lives. But we don't look to the Bible as the so...

When You're Down, You're Not Out
As a New England Patriots fan it is no secret what I was doing at 6:30 pm on Sunday, February 5th. Needless to say I was in disbelief and shocked at what was the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. If for some reason you are not a football fan, or have been living under a rock for the past few ...

What is it you want from me, Lord?
Living a Christian life can be hard. It can cause us to wonder. Wonder if we want to be all-in, just do enough to get by, or disregard the whole Christian way of life. Yes, God wants our love, but more-so He wants to love us. He wants to love us fully. And love is only complete when it is met w...

If you think of this world as a place intended simply for our happiness, you find it quite intolerable: think of it as a place of training and correction and it's not so bad.
First, let’s ask the question “What does ‘refining’ mean”? The Old Testament prophets often use words of judgement against God’s people. When we hear them, it sometimes sounds as if God’s aim is not to help his people but to smash and destroy them!...

Faith is a two-way street
The third Sunday in Ordinary Time brought us once again to Matthew’s account of Jesus’ call of the first disciples. When I hear Jesus’ words “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men,” I cannot help but be reminded of the old adage that weighs the relative benefits of giving a man a singl...

The Apocalypse is Ultimately a Book of Hope, Yes, BUT....
Yes, in the end, God will triumph over sin and death at the end of time. I would like, however, to comment, that I think there are two of the best possible layers of apocalypse that have fallen by the wayside in modern Catholicism: spiritual historicism and idealism...

Question: Why So Many Divisions in Christianity?
Let's take a look at the divisions that have appeared in the Body of Christ over the centuries. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but more of just a background to our current tens of thousands of Christian denominations....
