God Wants You to Spend More Time on Self-Care
I was recently at a seminar that pertained to keeping a balance in one’s life. The speaker revealed that the contemplative religious have longer life spans than the rest of us. The theory behind why is that they have greater balance and peace as a result of their lifestyle and personal choices to li...

I don't want to be an anti, against anybody. I simply want to be the builder of a great affirmation: the affirmation of God, who loves us and who wants to save us.
Then again, most of those whom Jesus chose to be His Apostles abandoned Jesus in disbelief during Holy Week, after having followed Jesus for three years, witnessing His miracles and hearing His preaching of the Gospel....

Chernobyl Diaper. Parental Joy. Fatherly Purpose.
Our Amazing Gracie had a "gift." Along with every other parent of two years olds on the planet, we were eager to get her potty trained. As were the garbage men. We were losing neighbors. The ozone was depleting. Al Gore was calling. You get the idea....

Unification
Today, in America, we are very divided, just like Paul saw happening in the church in Corinth almost 2,000 years ago. It wouldn’t take a lot to change the above scripture reading to be stated directly at the United States of America....

The Over-Salted Generation
This generation salts their food. The phrase echoes in my mind randomly. I might be thinking of the human race, the movement of people’s spirituality, the way some people can’t eat a thing without salt… it echoes. This generation salts their food....

Humor and Laughter in the Christian Life
‘Humor’ is not a word that is usually associated with Christianity. ‘Traditional’, ‘serious’, ‘somber’, ‘joyful’, ‘intellectual’, ‘religious’, ‘conservative’ and so on: all of these words and more, whether accurate or not, have been used by both Christians and non-Christians as descriptions of the ...

Those who aren't following Jesus aren't his followers. It's that simple. Followers follow…….. To follow Jesus means to follow Jesus into a society.
We’ve all seen children who “don’t hear” when their parents call to them. A summons from the next room to come to dinner isn’t always heard by a child absorbed in a game....

Blessed Anacleto González Flores: Husband; Father; Martyr *
Our neighbor to the south, Mexico, has a long and fascinating history, some not so memorable. One period that was chillingly deadly and oppressive was during the tenure of Presidente Plutarco Elias Calles. Officially in office from 1924-1928, he effectively retained much influence until 1940....

Distraction
When handing out the host during Communion last weekend, I was overcome with emotions. This was a first for me. I have been a Eucharistic Minister for several years now. I have given the cup to hundreds of people and handed out probably thousands of hosts in that time. I have felt honored to serve t...

Overcoming Anger: The Final Spiritual Struggle
We feel it everywhere: Anger. Whether a seething whisper or bellowing roar, resentment, anger, even rage, feels like the fuel of this brand new year as the second decade of the twenty-first century heads south....

Are Heavenly-minded People No Earthly Good?
Quite often religious people are accused of being so heavenly minded, they are no earthly good. The thinking goes that people who look forward to spending eternity in peaceful joy with God in Heaven are too willing to accept unacceptable conditions here and now....

The Human Element in the Eucharistic Miracle
Often I find myself contemplating the miracle of human life. In the ebb and flow of modern day existence often such miracles are sadly thrown away, disregarded, aborted, euthanized....

Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?
Why do we pray? What motivates us to pray? When do we pray? These are questions that come to mind as I reflect upon this Gospel passage. I think prayers of petition, prayers for favors needed are probably on the top of everyone’s list of why we pray....

The Holy Family: Resilience, Perseverance, and Grace
The family unit has been under increased pressure from society and so many families have accounts of sadness, conflict, and are on the verge of disintegration. The recent homilies from Pope Francis center around the 100th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions in Fatima and the revelation that Mary t...

Scripture alone, a tradition of men
A tradition of men, such as the one mentioned in Scripture, would be the doctrine of Scripture alone, which gives all individuals the right to interpret Scripture any way they want. Thus, invalidating the God given rule that one must obey those He has put in charge of our souls, in the Church....

A Call to Christian Empathy
In 2001, journalist Barbara Ehrenreich published her acclaimed book “Nickel and Dimed (On NOT Getting by in America)”. From 1998 to 2000, the journalist went undercover as an unskilled laborer to take on minimum wage jobs and investigate first-hand the plight of the “working poor.”...

If you're not making someone else's life better, then you're wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other lives better.
Jesus’ words call us to focus on lifting each other up instead of putting each other down. They call us to bring life to our worship together instead of death (It’s not always the pastor’s fault)....
