Once in awhile a smile unexpectedly bursts forth from someone in our lives and transforms the day into pure sunshine. This is about one of those smiles....

Shoes and Belts
This morning I was reading December's Magnificat. Father Peter John Cameron, O.P. wrote an editorial on belts. He quotes the Jesuit Father Cornelius a Lapide saying that a belt can be penitential...

Catholic GPS: Good mother Mary, Prayer, the Sacraments
I was late. The party had started and I was 30 minutes away. I slammed the steering wheel in frustration. I heard the GPS barking at me and it was telling me to take the next exit and then do a U-turn! I ignored it. It kept telling me to turn around until I turned the sound off....

Why Me? Why Me? Why Not Me?
Imagine Mary and Joseph, both apprehensive about the call God gave them to be the parents of Jesus. They probably thought to themselves: Why me?...

The Church is not a theological classroom. It is a conversion, confession, repentance, reconciliation, forgiveness and sanctification center, where flawed people place their faith in Christ, gather to know and love him better, and learn to love others as he designed.
To what extent are we open to our constant need for conversion? How mindful are we of our moment-to-moment need of God's grace and our need to seek his help? How ready are we to listen to him in our daily lives?...

Abandoned
It's interesting to a certain degree being a person with a strong faith and knowing somoene who has been abandoned by God. I am sure He is there. I am sure He is good. I am sure that He loves us and hears us...

Waiting: For Christmas and the End of Time
I find myself waiting for a lot of things. Waiting for packages to arrive in the mail, waiting for conversations to occur, waiting for the end of the semester, or just waiting for something new to happen. Advent is filled to the brim with waiting....

We Know the Church Will Win the War
World War II documentaries are fascinating. When the documentaries describe a bleak time during the war, say, the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor or the relentless bombing of London, your heart goes out for the people involved....

Christmas for the Unhappy
Christmas. The very name conjures up warm and happy images of home and family - children hanging their stockings, families decorating their trees, carols softly playing. These images are reinforced by everything from seasonal movies and books to holiday commercials....

A Catholic Christmas
Over the centuries since the birth of Jesus Christ and the institution of the Catholic Church much has been said about its exclusiveness, its restrictive doctrines, and its limitations....

Let the storm rage and the sky darken - not for that shall we be dismayed. If we trust as we should in Mary, we shall recognize in her, the Virgin Most Powerful ‘who with virginal foot did crush the head of the serpent'.
"…. let it be done to me as you have said." In Faith, "Mary follows even without understanding" unlike us who insist on understanding before we follow. Faith is not 100% certainty but 100% commitment. These are the words of a good priest in one of our parish recollections....

Westley, Buttercup and Freedom in Marriage
The Princess Bride was on TV the other night. No matter what else is happening in my life, if I’m flipping channels and I come across The Princess Bride, that’s as far as I’m going. I have the movie on DVD—I could watch it any time I want—without commercials. But, if I see it on TV, I’m watching ...

Meditation on the Nativity
It was late when they reached Bethlehem. Many from the caravan quickly scattered to find room in the inns or to set up their own tents for shelter. Joseph was weary from the long trip, and his concern for Mary. She smiled at him through her exhaustion and distress, knowing her time was near....

Saying "Yes" to God's "No"
My “Type A” personality makes it difficult to let go of control, to go with the flow, or to be flexible. I like things to be a certian way, and when plans change, it irks me. In my group of friends and even among my family, I’m always the one with plans that are set months in advance...

Faith is about doing. You are how you act, not just how you believe.
John the Baptist knew all too well that something is terribly wrong with the world and he came out to alert people then and us today that One was coming who could fix it....

Christmas, Santa and a Boy's Dying Wish...
I'll admit it. I'm a sucker for Christmas stories. Every year, there's a heartwarming story or song that really touches my heart (to the point where I find myself quietly sobbing and people coming up to me to see if I'm alright). The Christmas Shoes by NewSong comes to mind....

In Defense of Santa
Every Christmas there’s a spate of articles about Santa and Christmas. Many of the devout families I know have chosen to avoid the tradition of Santa for a variety of good reasons. After all, the juggling of the glass balls of parenting makes for difficult, sensitive work, and each must choose ac...
