The Holy Catholic Church?
Of all the distinguishing marks of the Church, the Church’s holiness is perhaps the hardest to reconcile with reality. The Church’s history is riddled with scandals and scoundrels. Even to this day, the enemies of the Church use this as a weapon to discredit the Church....

Big Fish, Little Fish Theory
My Dear Brother, I was driving home from Louisville tonight and felt compelled to pray for you. I do pray for you often but I’m not good at praying praying. I’m trying to improve the way I pray by getting away from praying my old way of, “Lord please blah blah blah,” and then it’s over but this time...

If There Is No Resurrection, Then Who Cares?
In this week’s gospel reading, a group of Sadducees attempted to trap Jesus with a hypothetical question. If a person had more than one spouse on earth, who would be the one true spouse in Heaven?...

Do You Want chips or An Apple? Should we let our children choose which religion they want to practice?
I remember that one of the issues that caught my eye the most when I came to live in Canada was listening to some parents say that they would let their children choose which religion they want to practice when they reach the age of maturity....

It is often easier to fight for your principles than to live up to them.
As we move to Election Day in the U.S., I think Jesus’ words may give us pause and a caution not to fall into the “heresy” of the Pharisee in the parable....

Just pray for them
While on a run in the local park, I was stopped by a homeless woman who usually speaks to me about God and the Bible. She will on occasion ask me what Father spoke about in his homily. I usually tell her what the Homily was about or, more importantly, tell her about the daily readings....

The Gospel Causes Division
In Luke’s gospel, chapter 12, Jesus made some startling statements: “I have come to set the earth on fire….Do you think I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division….a father will be divided against his son…a mother against her daughter.”...

Tattoos & the Transmission of Faith
Full disclosure: I have 10 tattoos… and I am very much Catholic. Perhaps that’s a shocking way to introduce a piece that attempts to bridge a perceived gap between two seemingly disconnected subjects, but I wish to point out, up front, that the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) delineates no po...

Modern Martyrdom
On October 19th, the Church celebrated Saints John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, and Companions, but they are commonly called the North American Martyrs. They were Jesuit missionaries from France who had come to North America to convert the natives, and they came knowing full well they would be in const...

How I found God's Mercy in my Life.
Have you ever wondered what gifts God has given to you? Since an early age I was taught that God gives to all of us many different skills, but I was never sure what mine were. At school, I wanted to join the choir; after the tryouts, let’s just say that I was invited to join the reading club instead...

Nothing erases the past. There is repentance, there is atonement, and there is forgiveness. That is all, but that is enough.
In the parable of the fig tree, Jesus tells us that God is willing to give us another chance even if we have failed him. Therefore, we should not give up at once since God does not want to give up on us....

An Honest Conversation About NFP: Seeing Through the Myths to the Truth
Natural family planning. It’s a topic that I’ve written on several times before. In past articles, I have attempted to disprove several common myths surrounding NFP in an attempt to defend it against those who would have you believe that it is not a legitimate form of preventing conception...

No More Waiting
Waiting is tough. The reality of our torturous wait lies in the fact that we are an impatient people, and have been such since the beginning of time (Literally, start with Genesis and work your way from there). Some people can wait just a small while, and others wait for what feels like decades. But...

God does not exist to answer our prayers, but by our prayers we come to discern the will of God.
For us it is easy to recognize and to confess Jesus Christ as God`s beloved son. But we have the same problem that people around Jesus had. We don`t recognize the signs of God`s presence...
