Chocolate Sin
Father Ignatius was at the supermarket pushing his trolley slowly from one aisle to the next and reading his shopping list as he went along. He rarely visited the confectionery counters but this time he made a special detour to buy a box of chocolates for Mrs Davenport, his housekeeper, whose birthd...

Faith of Our Fathers: The True Nature Of The Cross We Might Have To Bear- The Rest of The Story
When St. Helena arrived in Jerusalem in 326, she found that three very famous holy sites were now sites of Pagan Temples. She ordered these temples to be dismantled . Over the cave in Bethlehem, where Christ was born, was an idol of Adonis. Over Calvary, where Christ had been crucified, was a large ...

Grieving with Grace
In a worldly sense, nothing about grief is graceful. It’s messy, and convoluted, and sometimes terribly ugly. It’s hard for other people to be around. It’s not a steadily upward climb, and it’s not brave. Grief is raw. It’s suffering complicated by deep longing and deeper love....

What's wrong with "Catholic guilt?"
A friend of mine, who interestingly is Mormon, recently commented on my apparent lack of remorse over something. She asked jokingly, “Where’s your Catholic guilt?” I said, “I don’t carry any.” She appeared confused and asked, “Are you giving up on being Catholic?”...

Taking out the trash (and other chores...)
Wednesday is trash day for us. All day Tuesday when I pass a trashcan I think "I have to take the trash out BEFORE its dark!" But inevitably, something else comes up. My five month old cries or needs a diaper, my four year old stubs her toe or my almost three year old brings me a treasure....

Limping to the Table; Healing the Father Wound

The Reluctant Roman: or Why I Converted to the Catholic Church, Part II: Worship and the Physical Man
As I have previously mentioned in the first part, I plan to outline three major ideas that finally convinced me to convert to Catholicism. None of these was the single deciding factor in my conversion, and these three reasons are by no means the only things that influenced me in my decision. But the...

Sign of No Peace
I absolutely cringe at the Sign of Peace. Next to the "meet-and-greet" social before Mass starts (see General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) paragraph 45), it is the most "Protestant" part of the Mass. It seems to come at the worst time - just after the Doxology and the Our Father and right ...

A Voice Cries Out
Many may be the times we will wonder, “Does anyone hear the words I share? Words we speak of comfort, reassurance, advice, encouragement; words that counsel or words to alert or warn in hopes to prevent further disasters in another’s life. Or perhaps the words we hesitently share that speak of perso...

Faith of Our Fathers - Constantine The Great
There are relatively only a handful of people who have left a greater mark on history than Constantine. His overwhelming cruelty, plots, and vices have been portrayed in many different books ever since his death. Now, almost 1700 years after he called the Council of Nicaea, we should revisit his acc...

Jesus' Recipe to Cure Worry
My first thought is that Jesus isn’t being very fair to Martha. Jesus is a guest in the home of two sisters, Mary and Martha. While Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, Martha is busy doing all the work. For goodness sake, somebody needs to serve the food and refresh the drinks, especially when that guest is J...

Be A Living Rosary
I believe God calls us to the vocation that is going to best help us encounter him and help us grow in holiness. The more we encounter him and grow in holiness, the more joy we will have. For me, that vocation is Motherhood....

Now is the Time of Mercy
"Santo Subito! Sainthood now!" This cry, which rang out from the crowds from the moment of Pope John Paul II's death, became reality when John Paul was declared a saint last year on the Feast of Divine Mercy....

The Reluctant Roman: or Why I Converted to the Catholic Church, Part I: History and Authority
Let me make this clear up front: I never wanted to be a Catholic. To begin with, I did not even see that as a serious possibility at first. As a Protestant, during my college years I had become terribly dissatisfied with the various churches that I had attended. Many were too liberal, some were bibl...

5 Strategies for a Good Night's Sleep
Do you sleep through the whole night soundly? I used to, long ago. Then I started having babies and waking through the night alongside them. The babies have all grown now but still, at times, I find it difficult to sleep through the night....

Lessons in Forgiveness
When I was pregnant with my daughter last year, my husband and I got in a pretty big argument. It wasn't over anything that bad, really, but I'm the kind of person who lets frustrations pile up, until I reach a breaking point, which I did just before one of our ultrasound appointments, right there i...
