This is the Weekend
When I was influenced more by the world than by Christ, I used to dread this weekend…the weekend before the Super Bowl and after the regular season when there was no football on at all. Now they have the Pro Bowl the week before the Super Bowl so there is that fix for the football junkies....

Normally
Normally... Normally, I don't wake up at 3:45 AM. 5:30 is my preference, but today I woke up very early. Normally, I eat sparingly for breakfast not wanting to blast my blood sugars into high gear so early. Yet, this morning, I cooked a full breakfast and enjoyed every bite!...

Pope Francis, General Audience September 18, 2013
In 1967 at age 19, I traveled around Europe. I walked the entire city of Rome day and night. The city was quite different then. I remember walking into St. Peter’s Basilica through the front doors, stepping into a totally lit Basilica. Pope Paul VI passed directly in front of me, carried on an ...

Prayers for the Oppressed: A Visit From Our Lady
I never wanted to be Catholic. In fact it was a last ditch effort to find a church before my husband and I started a family. I was terrified when I saw our priest. I'd never seen a priest in real life, but there he was, all in black and so eager and excited to see a new face....

Don't Let "Ordinary Time" be ordinary!
As I write this, it is the Monday in the Second Week of Ordinary Time in the Liturgical Calendar. During the last seven weeks, we had a whirlwind of liturgical events. We had four weeks of Advent followed by Christmastide, which, as if it wasn't significant enough, included the Feast of the Holy Fa...

Are You a Catholic Apologist?
For Many of us an apologist is someone on the radio who make a living out of answering objections about our faith. This is partly true. Young Men Need Strong, Masculine Friendships
Recently, I was visited by a friend I had not seen in awhile. For the sake of anonymity, we shall call him "Robert." During his stay, we talked about the usual items two friends discuss when reconnecting....

The Sin of Blasphemy is NOT "Free Speech"
Asia Bibi, a mother of five and a Catholic, languishes in a Pakistani prison. She has been there for five years. She waits for them to come and drag her to the gallows where she will be hanged by the neck until dead. Why? Because, to the Muslims, working alongside her in the fields, she was an "Inf...

His Refining Fires
Oh my, I opened up a keg of something when I opened up to Malachi 3, for since then, God has taken me down the road of experiencing these Words. He wants me to really LEARN what was heard. Isn’t He awesome, and isn't it awesome to know how loved you are as you are disciplined and purified?...

This Is What Depression Can Do!
For 6 months in 2014, I had been dealing with unknown illness and even the possibility of leukemia. One day I wrote this blog, as writing is very therapeutic for my soul. This is what depression does. Yesterday, mentally my brain did not seem to want to work, my mood was down and who cares what ...

Catch the Butterfly
The other day I was listening to a program on Catholic Family Radio. The host caught my attention when she was speaking to a caller asking about what to do when her prayer or meditation time was distracted by other thoughts. “Boy,” I thought, “That happens to me.” Along with thoughts about what a...

VISIONS
Imagine your child, whom you love and trust not to tell lies, because you brought him up that way; one day tells you that he has seen a vision of Jesus in the park. Do you ignore him and put it down to children’s imagination? Do you tell him not to tell lies? Do you instruct him not to repeat such s...

Oh Those Bells
Each day is like the blank piece of paper that appears when you pull up Microsoft Word. Unknown just what will be written as you let the Holy Spirit start the flow of thoughts going forth. There is the sound of the college bells ringing softly in the background as I write....

The True Meaning of Life
How often in the rat race of life, with work, family, kids, school activities, sporting events, running from here to there, do we find ourselves asking the question: What is the purpose of all of this; there has to be something more?...

How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?
Almost every morning I enjoy the luxury of listening to my son practice his oboe. Starting at the break of dawn, like a morning prayer—Haydn and Tchaicovsky and some etudes by Barret echo in the winter dark through our house in the woods....

Should The Church make compromises with popular (pop) culture?
Compromises, as you may know, are good and proper in certain situations, but not in all. For example, if I like Italian food, but my family members (those I live with) like Japanese food, and we all want to eat the food we like always, it is in good order to make a compromise for an agreement to be ...

A Life Worth Living – The Brittany Maynard Story
By now I'm sure most of you have heard about the suicide of Brittany Maynard. Brittany was a 29-year-old woman who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer one year after her wedding. When doctors suggested that she might only have six months to live, she and her family moved from California to Oreg...
